PV panel maintenance: The key to extended life and efficiency

Photovoltaic (PV) panels are one of the most popular and greenest sources of renewable energy. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the installed capacity of PV panels worldwide reached more than 700 GW in 2020 and is expected to increase to more than 1,500 GW by 2030. However, in order for PV panels to fulfil their role in the production of green energy, it is important to ensure that they are properly maintained and serviced.

Maintaining PV panels involves regularly checking their condition, cleaning them of dust, dirt and snow, repairing damage and malfunctions, and optimising their performance and lifetime. Maintenance of PV panels is essential as it affects several key aspects of their performance, such as: 

• Efficiency: Maintenance of PV panels prevents a decrease in their efficiency caused by pollution, shading, damage or material degradation.  

• Lifespan: Maintenance of PV panels extends their lifetime, which depends on the quality of materials, weather and operating conditions.  

• Safety: Maintenance of PV panels ensures safety for both users and the environment. Malfunctioning or damaged PV panels can be a fire, electrical or mechanical hazard, as well as emit harmful substances into the atmosphere or soil. Therefore, maintenance of PV panels should be carried out by qualified and certified professionals. 

PV panel maintenance is therefore a key element in the management of PV farms, i.e. assemblies of PV panels installed over large areas that supply energy to the grid or to local consumers. Managing PV farms requires not only monitoring and maintaining PV panels in good condition, but also optimising their performance, costs and profits, as well as minimising their environmental impact. PV farm management is therefore a complex and multidimensional process that requires sophisticated tools and methods.
